No Candy. Candy can be easily left within the dog’s reach and eaten in large quantity, candy wrappers and all! Everybody knows that chocolate is toxic, and many sugar-free candies, gum contain Xylitol, a sweetener that is also toxic to dogs. If you suspect that a pet has ingested Xylitol, call a veterinarian immediately.

Harmful Holiday Decorations. Certain decorations can be very enticing for pets to play with. Ensure all of your decorations are well beyond your pet’s reach, especially glass or other fragile items, as these can be a potential choking hazard and a costly vet visit.

Have I.D. Tags on Everybody Although we all would like to think our pets would not run away form their loving home. Sometimes the sight of an open door is too difficult to overcome. Having proper identification on all pets in the home will help ensure a safe return if your pet were to go missing.

Provide a Safe Spot for your pets. With lots of commotion around, your pet may become overwhelmed and not want to participate in the fun. Make sure to give your pets a quiet space in the home when the house is very active, so they don’t have to be stressed, and potentially misbehave due to the stress.

Costumes are fun, but not necessarily for every pet. If your pet is showing signs of stress, it is best to stop and take off the costume. Make sure the costume isn’t restricting movement, vision, hearing or the ability to breathe or bark. Avoid costumes with small, dangling accessories that the pet could chew off and possibly choke on. Make sure that costumed pets are supervised at all times. If costumes are not your pet’s favorite thing, a bandana, or festive collar could be their new look!

Have a Happy Halloween!
