Don’t shop, Adopt! 5 benefits of adopting your next pet.

Adopt, Don’t Shop!

Considering adding a new dog or cat to your family? Wondering whether you should buy from a breeder or adopt? Paws down, adopting a rescue is the kindest option. Here are 10 reasons why you should adopt from a rescue rather than buy from a breeder.

1.Want a puppy?

Oftentimes people decide to buy rather than adopt because they do not think they can find a puppy otherwise. This is completely untrue! Sadly entire litters of puppies and kittens are often surrendered to the animal shelter. If you are set on a specific breed, 25% of the dogs at shelters and rescues are pure bred.

2.They will love you more than anything.

Sometimes a rescue dog may need a little bit of time to warm up to you, but once they trust you, they will absolutely melt your heart.  Rescue dogs always seem very grateful for the second chance at life, and love.

3.Adopt one, save two!

When you adopt a dog or cat from the shelter, you are actually saving two lives! Shelters and rescues only have so much kennel space. Though there is a shortage of space, there is ever growing population of homeless pets. When you adopt, it allows the rescue or shelter to take in another homeless pet, also your adoption fee goes toward the vetting and other expenses to keep the rescue in operation.

4.You are fighting the good fight!

By adopting rather than buying you are making a decision that helps fight a very serious over breeding issue. Thousands of dogs are cats are euthanized a day for kennel space; millions a year. Until there is not such an abundance of pets created and destroyed, pets should be rescued and not bought.

5.Doing good, feels good.

You are fighting the good fight and it feels great to do so. making a small difference in the world, and a big difference to a dog.  You are saving 2 lives, 3 if you count your own. Practice patience as you allow your new friend to become comfortable, helping you grow as a person.  Adoption is just wonderful. It is not always easy, but it is an awesome thing to do. You will have more responsibility after adopting, but you are going to feel really good about it.

Where do I find the right rescue dog for me?

Adopting a pet is an important decision and you should never rush it if you are unready. There are many options when searching for your new best friend. You can choose to adopt straight from the county animal shelter if you want to save a pet from a situation where they may be euthanized for space, or, you can adopt from a rescue allowing the rescue to take another dog from county in it’s place. When you adopt your new dog or cat, there will be a transitional period. You will need to become comfortable with each other and this could take time. If you are looking for a specific breed, there are rescue websites that will help put you in contact with breed specific rescues.
