Weight Loss Tips for a Healthy Pet

According to surveys, over half our pets are overweight. This puts 80 million pets at risk for  arthritis, diabetes, kidney and heart disease, high blood pressure and even cancer. Slimming down your chunky pet may be easier than you think!

In order to know how much to feed you pet, you must know how many calories they need. Feeding guides on bags are not always accurate for your pet’s needs. If you have an older, less active pet who is spayed or neutered, you should be feeding 20 percent less than the instructions on the bag.

Exercise is key to along and healthy life for us and our pets. Dogs need at least 30 minutes a day of a brisk walk to maintain their health and immune system. You have to commit to daily walks no matter what the weather is like outside. They count on us for all of their needs, including exercise.  These walks benefit us, too and can help strengthen your bond with your dog.  Cats need at least 20 minutes of daily exercise, such as a laser pointer or feather toy.

Too many treats can negate any diet or exercise plan. Choose low calorie treats, such as baby carrots, apples slices and even ice cubes. Make sure to count those extra calories! As little as 30 extra calories a day can lead to a 3 pound weight gain a year.

Be sure to check your pet’s food label before feeding. A high protein, low carb diet is ideal for initial weight loss. Be sure to check with your vet before making any changes to their diet.

It’s our responsibility to help our pets maintain a healthy weight. Just as you’d never walk your dog without a tag, collar and leash, it’s up to us as pet parents

to feed nutritious foods and treats and provide daily exercise.
