Can Cats and Dogs Live Together?

It’s common these days for dogs and cats to share a home with their human family. Before this can happen peacefully, it is important to remember that cats and dogs are two very different species. They have different needs that we need to respect in order for them to be fulfilled and live in harmony.

Dogs and cats have very different social structures. Dogs tend to live in packs with one dominant animal. Cats tend to be solitary animals, which result in territorial behavior. This difference in behavior and lifestyle can create tension. Cats and dogs can live in peace if you are mindful of both of their social structures.

When bringing a new dog into the home, it is important to respect your cat’s territory by providing it with its own space that the dog cannot access.  Cats can take awhile to adjust to a new family member and it is essential that they are kept safe and secure during that time. Don’t force close contact.

The first meeting between two animals who will live together is a crucial moment and can set the tone for the future.  Try to exercise your resident pet and get them tired out for the first meeting. As mentioned earlier, give the cat a safe place to hide and make sure the dog is on leash during the meeting. In fact, it can be a great idea to tether your dog to your pants loop for the first few days to discourage chasing. If the interaction is positive and both pets are calm, let them continue to co-exist with distractions such as toys and treats a rewards for good behavior.

Try to have the introduction in large room with the doors open so the pets do not feel trapped. Have a family member help with the introductions to help with safety. Consulting a professional trainer to help you know what to expect can be key to success.

With a little work, dogs and cats may not just tolerate each other, they even become best friends.
